Nuremberg

We made our way to Nuremberg via the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal.

We left the Danube River in lower Bavaria...
and followed the canal 171 kms to the Rhine River.

The canal was started in the late 19th century...
and abandoned several times before finally being completed in 1992.

We passed through 16 locks and under 123 bridges.

It was an engineering feat that cost 235 billion Euros...
and connected the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea.
It is a major shipping corridor.

The cycling path beside the canal...
was well used by pedestrians (and their dogs) and cyclists.

The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg...
built around 1140 by Emperor Konrad III.

The city wall...and moat.

The main entrance to the castle.

Cobblestone pathway at the castle.

Panoramic view of Nuremberg as seen from the castle.

Sinwell Tower.

Built to stand up!

Every emperor stayed here at some point from the 11th century on.

Obere Schmiedgasse is a street leading to the castle.

We were in Nuremburg on Oktoberfest...
hence all the guys gathered around the barrels with beer in hand!

The Schoner Brunnen Fountain (14th century fountain) in the market square of Nuremberg.

A market was in full swing...
but as we arrived the skies opened up and we ran for cover.

We found shelter in a bakery cafe and made friends with two US military guys who lived nearby.

And then it was time to meet up with our tour group back at the fountain...
and we had no idea where it was.

Thankfully we met up with a server from our cruise ship who knew the way!

And that was Nuremberg!
